LEILA FAILS TO GET SC NOD TO ATTEND KIAN’S SENATE HEARING

Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II on Tuesday insisted that jailed Sen. Leila De Lima is barred by law from participating in Senate sessions and hearings due to her present incarceration over drug charges.
Aguirre cited the Supreme Court 2008 ruling that denied Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV’s plea to reverse the decision of a Makati court handling his coup d’etat case that junked his plea to be allowed to go to the Senate to attend sessions and hearings.
The DoJ head issued the statement in response to de Lima’s motion on Tuesday asking the SC to allow her to attend the Upper Chamber’s hearing on Thursday into the controversial death of 17-year-old Kian delos Santos last week.
Among other charges, de Lima has been accused of abetting the proliferation of illegal drugs inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) during her term as Justice secretary.
She has been detained at the Philippine National Police (PNP) Custodial Center in Quezon City since February. She has denied the accusations.
